Electives in India for Dental Students

UPDATE: India Programs closed until further notice

  • Placement location: Jaipur
  • Role: To gain experience from local staff and add to your previous dentistry training
  • Requirements: You must be a student studying dentistry. If you are not a student, please go to our standard Dentistry in India page
  • Types of Placement: Dental clinics
  • Accommodation: Host family
  • Length of placement: From 2 weeks
  • Start dates: Flexible

If you are considering taking your Dentistry Elective located in Jaipur, India then you will be working alongside skilled dentists who are experienced in having North American and European students working alongside them. You will be exposed to many oral conditions, some of which will be in their advanced stages. By taking your Dentistry Elective in India, you will have a challenging but rewarding experience where you will improve your skills and knowledge in the field.

You must be a dental student to do an Elective placement. Projects Abroad are experienced in supporting Dental Elective students and will help coordinate your placement with your university. Our in-country staff will aim to place you in a clinic that best suits the requirement of your elective. You will be assigned a supervisor who will be a qualified dentist. They are experienced in mentoring students, are happy to test your knowledge, and will discuss specific case studies with you.

Dental Student Electives in India with Projects Abroad

You will be based in a dental clinic in Jaipur. You will shadow your supervisor who will speak English. Common procedures you may come into contact with include root canal work, bridges and crowns, implants, and minor surgeries. Your supervisor may communicate in Hindi to their patients but will translate back to you. Take a notebook and pen with you to take notes and ensure you record interesting cases and procedures and can discuss them with your supervisor at a later date.

You may also have the chance to take part in dental outreach work. You may shadow a dentist as he or she works as a visiting consultant, or you could help with oral hygiene camps in neighboring communities.

When interning in India you will stay with a local host family. They will show you true Indian hospitality and make you feel very welcome. You can spend your free time exploring the delights of the area with our energetic Projects Abroad volunteer community.

Dental Student Electives in India are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
